TOUR OVERVIEW
Dates: October 9th to 11th, 2026
Join us for an immersive Rainforest Exploration & Macro Photography Tour in the heart of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, nestled in the Nilgiri Hills of the Western Ghats, South India. This unique landscape connects seamlessly with Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Bandipur and Nagarhole in Karnataka, forming a vital wildlife corridor that supports exceptional biodiversity.
These lush, mist-covered hills are an ideal setting for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and macro photographers. With high elevation and abundant rainfall, the region harbors an extraordinary range of life – especially amphibians and reptiles, many of which are endemic and found nowhere else on Earth.
Expect to encounter a spectacular variety of amphibians, including our target bush frog species:
Raorchestes signatus, Raorchestes thodai, Raorchestes tinniens, Pseudophilautus wynaadensis, Raorchestes ravii, Raorchestes charius, and Raorchestes coonoorensis.
We’ll also be looking for the stunning Spotted Green Tree Frog (Ghatixalus variabilis) and the Pink-thighed Dancing Frog (Micrixalus phyllophilus), along with a variety of night frogs, cricket frogs, toads, and multiple species of caecilians(limbless amphibians).
Our reptile encounters may include incredible species like the Horseshoe Pit Viper (Craspedocephalus strigatus), Bronze-headed Vine Snake (Ahaetulla perroteti), Perrotet’s Mountain Snake (Xylophis perroteti), Black-spotted Kukri Snake (Oligodon venustus), Perrotet’s Shieldtail (Plectrurus perrotetii), and the charismatic Nilgiri Salea lizard (Salea horsfieldii).
The region is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 350 species of birds, including colorful flycatchers, minivets, hill mynas, Asian fairy bluebirds, woodpeckers, and a variety of raptors. The forest is home to large mammals such as tigers, leopards, gaur, sambar and barking deer, wild boar, and nocturnal species like mouse deer, civets, flying squirrels, and porcupines.
Accompanying you on this journey is Phillip Ross, who will guide you through this breathtaking ecosystem. He’ll share his deep knowledge of the region’s wildlife and teach you key techniques in macro and wildlife photography, helping you capture the magic of the rainforest through your lens.
Come explore the rich biodiversity of the Nilgiris – a living tapestry where countless species coexist in delicate harmony, offering you an unforgettable adventure into the heart of one of India’s most biodiverse regions.
